I Gave $100 To A Child In Africa. Here's What Happened 10 Years Later

Joining in God’s plan is incredibly rewarding.

Before starting Abide, I lived for years in Congo, Kenya, and Ethiopia. As someone who's passionate about helping others, I did humanitarian work in Africa for much of my 20's and 30's. I have countless stories from my time there, yet one stands out quite a bit.

When I was about to leave Congo, a crippled boy asked me to give him $100 so he could study basic computer skills. His name was Peter Mugisho. After praying about it, I felt led to sponsor him to take this computer class. Soon after, I left the country and didn't think about Peter much.

Ten years later I returned to Congo with my wife, Nadia. We were in the processing of adopting twin boys from Congo. We had just met with twins Amani and Zeke and were sitting in a hotel cafe. A nice looking man in white suit suddenly comes up to us.

“Are you Neil?” He says, with a look of wonder.

“I think so!” I said, taken by surprise. “Who are you?”

“I’m Peter!” he said. “Peter Mugisho!”

Peter said that he managed a construction company that built new schools. He was helping to bring education to the next generation in Congo.

I was in complete disbelief. Only God could have orchestrated such an encounter.

Since then, I've kept in touch with Peter. When he visited San Francisco recently, he met the rest of my extended family.

I had no idea that giving $100 to Peter would impact him so much. I planted a seed- and God blessed me in being able to see the fruit.

Given my personal experiences with sponsoring Peter and adopting two children from Africa, I'm a strong supporter of helping those in need.

I can confidently say that a small investment can change hundreds of lives. Abide has partnered with Compassion International to sponsor children in need. With Compassion, you can choose to support a child from a specific country, age range, and gender. Your gift can help them with food, medical needs, education, and future opportunities.

I hope you pray about sponsoring a child in need. Experience the reward and see how God uses your story to reach others.
